What is Learning Express?
Learning Express is an international Social Innovation Programme by Singapore Polytechnic that provides you with the opportunity to experience the natural world, learn new skills, make meaningful new friendships and rediscover yourselves through out-of-classroom learning.
What are Learning Express’ Objectives?
Learning Express seeks to promote Design Thinking and Social Innovation. By bringing together students from various disciplines and partner educational institutions, teams will collaborate to contribute to a community as they apply domain skills and use the Design Thinking Methodology to co-create innovative solutions that strives to meet the needs of the local community.
Some of these challenges include clean water, alternative energy, food productions & innovation, healthcare and enterprise issues. This is an immersive experience for the students as the team works together closely with their peers in the local community hence nurturing a sense of purpose and social contributions to society. As teams interact with the communities they visit, they expand their cultural quotient as they unravel new insights into different communities, their cultures, and norms.
What will you learn?
1. Cross-Cultural Intelligence
Participants from all over the world will undertake a cultural immersion programme of local community, learning the history and social aspects to provide a framework and background so as to prepare them to understand the context of the issue/problem when interacting with the community. The intense cultural interactions between the various cultures and nationalities of students will provide insights that strengthen students’ cross-cultural understanding.
2. Academic Knowledge into Action
Participants are taught to make sense of what they have acquired in the classroom through putting/linking the academic knowledge into practical execution via various methodologies. The various stages of this discovery/application process are conducted in a real-world situation and are properly structured. The buddy system will enable participants to deepen their understanding on the local community and to encourage meaningful interaction.
Through this immersive environment, participants are able to gain greater empathy of the local community which enable them to fully grasp the communities’ concerns with proper insights mined, and user needs (persona) determined. As a consequence of this immediacy of experience, this learning activity is more likely to be personally meaningful to students and to generate emotional consequences, to challenge values as well as ideas, and hence to support social, emotional and cognitive learning and development of the students.
3. Interpersonal Skill Sets: Working in a Team-based Environment
Participants learn to work in a team-based environment and pulling different resources and expertise into the project. The close and intense work nature of the project requires students to exercise substantial compromise and accommodation towards finding common grounds. They will need to leverage on each other’s abilities and cohesively develop a comprehensive solution that addresses the concerns, needs, and hopes of the community.
Students Criteria :
- Conduct simple conversation but can be understood easily.
- Able to translate local language content to English verbally
- Student presents concepts in a clear and logical manner.
- Student is verbally articulate and able to draw audience attention.
- Student listens actively and asks questions to clarify.
- Student is energetic when brainstorming, excited with ideating (coming up with ideas)
- Student is able to bring a team together to work with others.
- Student acts constructively without being told to do so.
- When given a feedback, student is able to receive it constructively.
- When given a challenge, student is able to move quickly to overcome the obstacle.
